Farmers in Assam and other parts of northeast India are having tough time due to less rainfall and extreme heat this year. In Assam state alone a total of 8,17,769 farmers in 19 districts have been affected and over 500,000 hectares of crop damaged. The Government has so far decided to distribute 10 litres of diesel to each of the affected farmers to pump water for irrigating of dry paddy fields. Assam Government has waived land tax for affected farmers and announced special holidays for schools from August 15 to 20 in view of unbearable dry weather.
