Name of the organization: Tafawol Association for Special Needs and Development
Title of the project: Assesing the Legal Rights of Newly Arriving Sudanese to Egypt
Date of the update: November 21st, 2024
The first months of Tafawol’s Oxfam project have been filled with activity.
After completing the mapping exercise in October 2024, Tafawol’s staff held the first two awareness sessions of legal rights for Sudanese new arrivals to Cairo. The first, held on November 13, 2024, was attended by 38 female new arrivals. The second, held on November 18, 2024, saw 23 women and 1 man in attendance.
These sessions provided awareness of the legal definition of ‘refugee’ found in the 1951 and 1967 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The registration process, currently under the purview of UNHCR, as well as protection mechanisms were also covered. In addition, services provided by existing organizations to refugees and asylum seeks were examined.
Finally, these information sessions provided information on accessing the job market in Egypt, things to avoid staying out of trouble, and general tips on self-protection and resilience strategies. Based on the feedback from these first two sessions, we are looking forward to carrying out the rest of the sessions throughout March 2025.
