Objectives of your project

1. Production and dissemination of a dossier on data collected in the fi eld that illustrates and denounces borderpractices in the Tunisian territory and the Central Med route. The report will analyze the migration routes, thedepartures, shipwrecks in order to assess how EU funding are spent in Tunisia and determine whether Tunisia can beconsidered a “”safe third country””, with whom the EU should (or not) make international deal and agreements aboutmigration management.
2. Sensitization of the local and international community on the issue of border violence, starting with the directexperience of Tunisian mothers and sisters working at the border. Building active memory by giving visibility to thecountless death happening to the Mediterrean.

Digital Health Solutions for Refugees' Access to Health

Objectives of your project

The project aims to enhance healthcare access for migrant and refugee women of childbearing age in Hatay,improving digital health literacy and tailoring health services via the HERA Digital Health App. Thus, it will be ensuredthat sexual and reproductive health and reproductive health information provided face-to-face in the fi eld andinformation on gender-based violence will become permanent through the HERA App. Objectives include raisingawareness on sexual and reproductive health, combating gender based violence, and promoting health check-ups toreduce preventable pregnancy risks. Additionally, the project will collect data on the effectiveness of digital healthsolutions in providing health access to displaced populations, generating accurate information for policy practitionersto support evidence-based policy-making and improve health outcomes for vulnerable groups.

Assessing the Legal Rights of Newly Arriving Sudanese to Egypt

Context and specific issue(s)

Since the armed conflict in Sudan began on April 15th, 2023, an estimated 410,000 people have fled Sudan and entered Egypt, as reported by UNHCR Egypt. Many Sudanese, upon arrival, rely on community networks for to find housing, healthcare, and other necessities. However, with the currently changing political climate, policies and legal decrees are changing at a rapid pace, sometimes weekly, both on the international and domestic levels. For example, the well-established Four Freedoms Agreement between Sudan and Egypt has all but been put on pause as all Sudanese men, women, and children now need visas to enter Egypt as of June 2023.

Objectives of the project

Through this project, our objectives are:
1) To assess the legal rights of Sudanese migrants and refugees in Egypt.
2) To ensure that community members are equipped with the most accurate information about their rights and status.
Activities
1) To conduct research with refugee lawyers and researchers from the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo, on the most up-to-date legal policies that affect the daily lives of Sudanese migrants and refugees in Egypt.
2) Holding legal information sessions with Sudanese community members from the Faysal area of Cairo, Egypt.
3) Collection of the main legal needs and concerns of the participants in the legal information sessions.
4) Creation and distribution of infographics to the community on the results of the research and data collection.

Empowering Migrants for Participation and Ownership in Regional Development (EMPOWERD)

Context and specific issue(s)

The EMPOWERD project aims to address critical issues concerning migrant and refugee rights in Colombia, particularly in the context of the Territorial Development Plans (PDT) for 2024-2027. Colombia faces complex migration challenges stemming from internal displacement, the Venezuelan crisis, and broader international flows.
Despite progress through the Venezuelan “Statute for Temporary Protection”, key issues include limited healthcare, education, social security access, heightening vulnerability; exploitation risks requiring stronger protections; and participation barriers hindering migrant voices in policy decisions critical for integration and wellbeing.

Objectives of the project

Through this project, our objectives are:
1) To enhance the meaningful participation and influence of Venezuelan migrant communities in the formulation of Territorial Development Plans (PDTs) in Colombia’s municipalities of Tumaco and Ipiales.
2) To strengthen the capacity of migrant organizations in Nariño to advocate for migrant rights and contribute effectively to policy discussions and decision-making processes.
Activities
1) Provision of capacity-building workshops and training sessions for migrant organizations on advocacy strategies, policy analysis, and community organizing.
2) Data collection on the needs, challenges, and aspirations of migrant communities in Tumaco and Ipiales municipalities and conduction of a comprehensive assessment of migrant participation in previous PDTs.
3) Organization of migrants/refugees’ rights advocacy and campaign.
4) Policy engagement and dialogue between migrant organizations, local government officials, and key stakeholders.

Aden crossroads: Empowering Horn of Africa Migrant and refugees for a peaceful Yemen

Context and specific issue(s)

Although Yemen has historically been a key hub along migration and trade routes connecting the Horn of Africa to the Middle East and beyond, it has increasingly become a destination for migrants and refugees, particularly from the Horn of Africa. Migrants and refugees in Yemen face exploitation, abuse, and human trafficking by smugglers and criminal networks. Countless human rights violations, including indiscriminate shootings, have been reported, with limited legal and social protections leaving many without access to asylum or redress for abuses.
Yemen faces a critical juncture in achieving lasting peace and addressing its displacement crisis, particularly concerning the plight of marginalized migrants and refugees, who are often overlooked in national policies and services. Sustainable peace relies on an inclusive approach that prioritizes the needs and experiences of all members of society, including migrants and refugees, in post-crisis recovery efforts.

Objectives of the project

1) To promote the long-term consideration and inclusion of the rights of migrants and refugees into Yemen’s peace process, and wider post-conflict reconstruction, policy development, and humanitarian-development nexus.
2) To identify and promote local durable solutions led by migrant and refugee experiences and voices through innovative national and local advocacy campaigning.
Activities
1) Conducting an evidence-based research and data collection analysis of the generalised unique needs, barriers, challenges and experiences of migrate and refugee communities living in Yemen urban city of Aden.
2) Drafting of a policy document, based on the research findings, to bolster an ongoing community advocacy initiative aimed at advancing migrant and refugee rights.
3) Supporting a local advocacy campaign, led by a grassroots women-led and refugee organization, to advocate for change and ensure that the voices of local migrants and refugees are represented in decision-making processes.

Solidary Wheels No Borders for Human Rights

Social and legal assistance for people on the move and advocacy on the southern border: Melilla

Context and specific issue(s)

Melilla and Ceuta, Spanish autonomous cities in Morocco’s Rif region, are Europe’s sole African borders. Melilla, at the end of the Western Mediterranean migration route, is Europe’s gateway from Africa. Geographically isolated by a 10 km triple fence, it’s a hub of violence and human rights violations against migrants. Access to Spain lacks legal routes; irregular entry into Melilla poses life-threatening risks—scaling fences or swimming for hours. “”Pushbacks”” persist violently, denying asylum opportunities and legal aid.

Objectives of the project

Through this project, our objectives are:
1) Emphasize the mandatory application of equal rights and anti-racism in the management of migration policies before local, state, and European institutions and organizations.
2) Raise awareness among civil society to demand the application of the principles of equal rights and anti-racism in migration policies.
3) Document and evidence human rights violations in Melilla to report them.
4) Contribute to the recognition of the entitlement to rights of individuals in border areas.
Activities
1) Organization of meetings with institutions and organizations.
2) Creation of political advocacy campaigns and their dissemination in media and social networks
3) Participation in and establishment of safe spaces for migrants, training of volunteers to detect possible rights violations.
4) Provision of legal support and follow-up, counselling migrants during shared trust spaces, detecting and documenting cases evidencing human rights violations.

Investigating surveillance technology that monitors migrants, refugees and human rights defenders

Context and specific issue(s)

Migrant and refugee women and girls who migrate through the Mexican southern border face unedited levels of violence. The use of technology has increasingly become a main element to control migration, with no limits to guarantee the right to privacy in its use. Thereby, the U.S. government launched the CBPOne app for asylum and parole. The app’s obligatory use has shown: inaccessibility, errors, privacy concerns, extortion cases associated with the app, and facial recognition bias blocking Black people from applying for asylum. The Mexican government announced the launch of its own app for asylum applicants in Mexico, called “Sistema de prerregistro” (Pre-registration system) seeking to fulfill the same purpose as CBPOne for asylum seekers.

Objectives of the project

Through this project, our objectives are:
1) to raise awareness of and report against the use of surveillance technology to monitor migrants, refugees and human rights defenders on the Mexican southern and northern borders.
2) to strengthen the skills of migrants, refugees and human rights defenders, particularly women and girls, to face digital risks through workshops in migrant and refugee shelters and with migrant and refugee rights organizations.
Activities
1) Conduction of a desk research on the following subjects: technology used to monitor migrants and refugees and the use of surveillance technology on the Mexican southern and northern borders.
2) Organization of 5 participatory research workshops with migrant and refugee women and girls in migrant and refugee shelters in Chiapas (Tuxtla Gutierrez, Las Margaritas, Tapachula), Tabasco (Tenosique), and Baja California (Tijuana).
3) Organization of 3 workshops with human rights defenders on digital security and to strengthen alliances for advocacy against the use of surveillance technology to monitor migrants, refugees and human rights defenders.
4) Conduction of 8 interviews with human rights defenders, non-profit organizations who defend migrant and refugee rights, and migrant and refugee shelters on the Mexican southern border (Chiapas and Tabasco).
5) Sharing of posts on social media, our website and SororApp (a free software and open source application we developed for migrant and refugee women) about digital security for migrants, refugees and human rights defenders and about the findings of the research project.
