Tafawol staff held 12 awareness sessions of legal rights for Sudanese new arrivals to Cairo. The sessions were held between December 21, til January 9, 2025. The participants of the 12 sessions totalled 435 Sudanese females and males.
The sessions provided awareness of the legal definition of ‘refugee’ found in the 1951 and 1967 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The registration process, currently under the purview of UNHCR, as well as protection mechanisms were also covered. In addition, services provided by existing organizations to refugees and asylum seekers were examined. These awareness sessions provided information on accessing the job market in Egypt, things to avoid staying out of trouble, and general tips on self-protection and resilience strategies. Based on the feedback from the sessions far, we are looking forward to carrying out the rest of the sessions throughout March 2025. Finally, the sessions also provided awareness on the new Egyptian asylum law which has recently passed by the Egyptian parliament and signed by the president of Egypt.
