Oxfam in BiH joined with its partners – Institute for Hydrotechnicsin Sarajevo and Tidea doo in Banja Luka – to celebrate the science in “Researcher’s Night 2013” in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Friday, 27th September 2013, for Sarajevo and Banja Luka was the unusual night in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two cities, Sarajevo and Banja Luka, have joined this European initiative of science celebrations, held in over 300 cities throughout Europe since 2005.

Event in Sarajevo was opened by Ambassador Peter Sorensen,Head of the EU Delegation to BiH & EU Special Representative, accompanied by Silvana Grispino, Country Director Oxfam in BiH.

“Science is important, it is all around us. By choosing science you choose to help your country in the best way.” said Grispino, addressing the young people at the gathering.

“If you work into research, you are helping this country to become a better place for living. BiH has large potential in people, especially in students and entrepreneurs. EU wants to encourageyou to continue building upon the foundation of the talents which you have”, said Ambassador Sorensen, in his opening speech.
Organisers prepared many interesting and fun activities for citizens in both cities, while there were also some visitors fromneighboring cities, too.
There were more than 30 participants presenting their work at thescience fair. Mini-labs, robots, machines and other interactive exhibits, attracted much of the attention of the visitors.

14 teams from Sarajevo and 10 teams from Banja Luka took part in the best science project competition. It was  not an easy job for the jury to select the best out of very innovative and imaginative projects. After long voting, “Solar sunflower” from Sarajevo and “Vibrations tras tres” from Banja Luka took the winning positions.

The science fiction quiz “Superheroes” connected teams from Sarajevo and Banja Luka via audio video link in competing in knowledge in literature, film, and similar. The team from Sarajevo won, though both teams have proven their very good knowledge.

Children enjoyed the interactive theatre play “ Tvrle ecologist”, who showed them that recycling is not boring, while the youngest ones were most excited about meeting the police in the community, as well as the firemen, with their latest technology vehicle.

During “Researcher’s Night” citizens of both towns also had the opportunity to leave the message for the future in the time capsule, participate in the archeological excavations, be part of real CSI Sarajevo team, take part in quizzes and science games, have coffee with the real scientist, as well to hear the lectures about science fiction and science mysteries awaiting to be revealed.

“Researchers Night”, supported by European Union from its FP7 program, is celebrated each last Friday in September, aiming to bring science closer to all people, as well as to encourage young people to consider science for their carrier.
In addition, “Researcher’s Night” in Sarajevo was fully supported by Federal Ministry of Education and Science, as well as Ministry for Education, Science and Youth of canton Sarajevo. The host of the manifestation in Sarajevo was municipality Novo Sarajevo.
