Balkan Florence Bridges Award 2018

CATEGORIA FILM FICTION

Primo classificato: TRI DENA VO SEPTEMBRI/ Three Days in September, di Darijan Pejovski. ??

CATEGORIA DOCUMENTARI

Primo classificato: DRUGA STRANA SVEGA/ The Other Side of Everything, di Mila Turajlić (Serbia). ??

Motivation of the Awards

THE JURY OF THE FESTIVAL FICTION FEATURE FILM SECTION COMPOSED BY CAMILLA TOSCHI, ANDREA MERLI AND GABRIELE RIZZA ASSIGN THE BALKAN FLORENCE BRIDGES AWARD 2018 TO “TRI DENA VO SEPTEMBRI” BY DARJIAN PEJOVSKI with the following motivation

The work moves along an aesthetic itinerary and a dramatic ridge that welcomes, in its compelling process, various suggestions, both on the exquisitely narrative level and on the purely formal one.

The film describes both convincingly and realistically, without unnecessary forcing, the evolution of a casual meeting between two women, each in his own way, a victim of violence. An unlikely relationship that, reversing the initial mistrust, opens paths of unexpected “opportunities” for both.

The director succeeds with peremptory awareness of the cinematographic medium to juxtapose and dose elements typical of the dramatic mechanism with the styles and gaits of the thriller genre.

Inserted in a geographical environment that circumscribes and enhances the identity, the two protagonists are lowered in their respective characters with masterful sincerity and electrifying skill.

THE JURY ALSO DECIDES TO ASSIGN A SPECIAL AWARD A EMIR HADZIHAFISBEGOVIĆ FOR HIS INTERPRETATION IN “ŽABA” BY ELMIR JUKIĆ with the following motivation:

For having expressed the drama of a man, a brother, a soldier, a believer and not the least of a whole country through the character of Zeko, around which the events of the film evolve.

Thanks to a superb range of acting shades and interpretive temperatures

all this world of latent tensions, unacknowledged discomforts and snaking conflicts, emerges with engaging clarity worthy of the best theatrical tradition.

THE JURY OF THE FESTIVAL DOCUMENTARY FILM SECTION COMPOSED BY SVEVA FEDELI, CORINNA DEL BIANCO, TAMAR TAL ASSIGN THE BALKAN FLORENCE BRIDGES AWARD 2018 TO “DRUGA STRANA SVEGA” BY MILA TURAJLIĆ with the following motivation:

It is our great pleasure to award the filmmaker Mila Turajlić from Serbia, with “The other side of everything”, for giving us an intimate insight of a character that has a number of facets, first of all she is a woman, then she is her mother, then she is a person of the former bourgeoisie, she is a scientist, she is a university teacher and she is a fighter for the rights of her country and her population. The character is a gentle & tough, inspiring & complex woman.

Through the personal story of her mother, the director is telling us 70 years of history of a nation, of people who wish for change, of youth who engage and fight for a better society. The filmmaker opens the door to her house to the viewer and offering a journey in time & place all in one location.

Finally the documentary has high technical quality, beautifully shot and finely composed with archival footage and current situations.
